Upcoming Democratic Party Events
2010 Caucus and Convention Cycle
At the last WSDCC meeting it was decided that we will not hold formal precinct caucuses this year but instead invite everyone that considers themselves a Democrat and is a registered voter in Stevens County to attend the County Convention on Apr. 10. Those present will discuss then approve a Platform and Resolutions for the Stevens County Democratic Party for 2010, and will elect delegates to the State Democratic Party Convention in June in Vancouver, WA. Since much of our input on the content of the Platform and Resolutions has come from the precinct caucuses in the past, we will probably hold informal community meetings to discuss the vision and direction of the Party and any resolutions to request solutions to specific problems and provide that information to the Platform Committee. A Platform Committee, Rules Committee and Credentials Committee will be appointed before Jan. 31.
Candidate Nominating Conventions
With the top two primary system that has been imposed in WA, the major parties have felt that their members have been deprived of their ability to select their own party’s candidate for the final elections. The Democratic Party in WA has decided that there need to be nominating conventions for each jurisdiction to select the party’s choice for each position. That nominated candidate will then be the only candidate for that position that can run as a Democrat and claim the endorsement of the Democratic Party in their campaign. As a result, Stevens County Candidates will be interviewed and a candidate nominated for each position to run as a Democrat. All Democrats can attend and participate but only PCO’s can vote. It is possible to hold the nominations at the County Convention, but that will be decided later. The same process applies for the LD and other jurisdictions with partisan races. For Congressional District Races the nomination process will involve Washington State Democratic Central Committee members. The details will be explained in upcoming meetings.
